Steel Industry

EMCC provides customized design services.

The steel industry is characterized by a high temperature and heat production environment, a large demand for cooling water, and high requirements for water quality and equipment stability. Cooling towers play a key role in this industry and are widely used in blast furnace cooling (open cooling towers are used to handle large flows of high-temperature circulating water), converter and electric arc furnace cooling (closed cooling towers are often used to avoid water pollution and equipment scaling), continuous casting machine cooling (open cooling towers provide efficient cooling to ensure the quality of ingots), rolling mill cooling (open cooling towers meet the high temperature requirements generated during the rolling process), and cooling of auxiliary equipment (closed cooling towers are often used to keep the water clean). These applications together support the continuity and stability of steel production.

Features

High-temperature process cooling needs: The steel production process involves high-temperature smelting, casting, rolling and other process links, which generate a lot of waste heat. Cooling towers play a key role in these processes, helping to control equipment temperature, prevent overheating damage, and maintain the stability of the production process.

Huge demand for cooling water: The cooling of each link in the steel plant requires a large amount of circulating water to remove waste heat. Cooling towers must have high processing capacity to meet the recycling and temperature control of large-flow cooling water to ensure continuous process.

Different requirements for water quality: Different steel processes have different requirements for cooling water quality. Some processes (such as cooling of auxiliary equipment) require higher water quality to avoid scaling and corrosion. At this time, closed cooling towers are usually used. Open cooling towers are often used for processes that require a large amount of cooling water.

High requirements for equipment stability and reliability: Since steel production is a continuous operation process, cooling towers need to operate without failure for a long time to ensure the continuity and stability of production and avoid shutdowns or equipment damage due to cooling system failures.

Typical Applications

Blast furnace cooling: When the blast furnace is ironmaking, the internal temperature is as high as 1500℃ or more, and the blast furnace body and auxiliary equipment need to be cooled to prevent overheating damage. Open cooling towers are usually used because they can handle large flows of high-temperature circulating water and provide sufficient cooling capacity to reduce the water temperature to meet the cooling needs of the blast furnace.

Converter and electric arc furnace cooling: During the steelmaking process, converters and electric arc furnaces will generate a lot of waste heat, and the cooling system needs to be cooled in time to maintain process stability. Closed cooling towers are often used here to avoid direct contact between cooling water and air, prevent water pollution and scaling problems, protect equipment, and extend service life.

Continuous casting machine cooling: In the continuous casting process, the cooling system is used to control the solidification process of high-temperature billets to ensure the quality of the billets. Open cooling towers are usually used because of their efficient cooling capacity to handle large flows of circulating water and quickly reduce the temperature to ensure normal solidification of the billets.

Rolling mill cooling: During the rolling process, steel and rollers will generate a lot of heat, which needs to be cooled to maintain equipment temperature and product quality. Open cooling towers are widely used here to meet the cooling needs of large amounts of high-temperature water in the steel rolling process.

Cooling of auxiliary equipment: Auxiliary equipment in steel mills (such as air compressors, hydraulic systems, etc.) also generates waste heat and needs to be cooled to avoid overheating and damage to the equipment. Closed cooling towers are usually used because they can keep the water clean and reduce scaling, and are suitable for equipment with high requirements for water quality.

Cooling of process waste gas: High-temperature waste gas generated during ironmaking and steelmaking needs to be cooled before discharge. Open cooling towers are suitable for handling the cooling needs of these high-temperature waste gases because of their simple structure and low cost. They can efficiently reduce the waste gas temperature and meet environmental protection treatment requirements.
